Redesigning a curriculum without impacting prior learner completions

More of a question than an idea, but wondering how others update a curriculum that has been redesigned, so prior courses for that curriculum are no longer used are removed and new courses are added without changing the curriculum for those who previously completed it. The problem I've found is that with changing the courses, then those who completed the prior version will now see new those new courses (that they don't need to take since they've completed the prior version).

I would make the prior curriculum inactive, however then it won't show on transcripts anymore. And if I just make a new curriculum with a new name, I can't report on both the old curriculum and new curriculum in one report, so it makes tracking it challenging.

Has anyone found a way to work around this?

@Christina, the work around works if there are optional courses in the curriculum. What if there are no optional courses?

I had a case where some of the classes in my curriculum were replaced with new courses, what I did was put that 1 course in a different group of courses where the learner only had to complete 1 of the 2 classes to mark it complete. Not sure if that would help, but it allowed me to use the same curriculum with the updates and none of the users who had previously completed the course would have to retake anything.
