For accessibility reasons, it makes the most sense to have the lesson player launch in full screen mode by default, while having the option to minimize the player. When the course is in the minimized version, it can be difficult to read the text within our courses, especially if a user is using a laptop screen to complete our online courses. The additional information (course title, course description, credits, and tags) that is below the player is relevant to the learner before they launch the course. Once they launch the course, their sole focus should be within the lesson player. If anything, this information may be helpful to the learner once they complete the course. Ultimately, the course lesson should get the maximum screen real estate.
Tracy this a great question. This update is specific to the new online Course Player which was released in July (https://support.absorblms.com/hc/en-us/articles/7542148445459-July-Release-Notes-and-Details-2022). To access the Course Player and the ability to set the learner view upon first launch, you will need to enable the Next Generation LE toggle (Portal Settings > Users (tab) > Enable Next Generation LE (toggle). Hope these details point you in the right direction!
I am not seeing this setting in our template. Has this been rolled out to everyone?
To accommodate the variety of lesson types and course designs, we’ve introduced a view selector for Learners to select a view that suits their learning as well as the ability for Admins to set the default view of the course player upon first launch. Please see https://support.absorblms.com/hc/en-us/articles/11333412202899-November-Release-Notes-and-Details-2022#01GJ5H2JRSD312WWV0F3BDSJXY for more details. We appreciate your feedback and ideas!
I agree! We use Articulate Rise and Storyline to create courses. Storyline shows up okay in the new player but Rise does not. We have several courses where we have the video in Rise set to full width and in testing this on a laptop (smallest monitor) and video doesn't fit in the player at all so now we have to go through and make the videos medium size within each Rise course, republish, and upload for us to even be able to turn on this new feature. Please make both the right side menu and bottom menu hide when the course is being viewed.
We are getting around this by just having everything launch in a new window. But I think it's confusing either way.
In the frame view, the button to maximize and minimize the window is hard to find and confusing. People don't always know how to see the full course or exit after.
In full screen view, users don't always know how to get out or exit the course.
A "X" (CLOSE) button should also be made available in full screen or maximized screen mode. This will allow the user to not have to find the minimize button in order to close the player.
Awesome, thank you, Demetrio! We at Fastenal are also more than happy to help with testing!
Thank you, Demetrio. This is a critical change for learner experience from our perspective. We (Axon) are happy to help you test any proposed solution.
THank you for this idea! We are currently investigating options and solutions here in conjunction with feedback regarding the prominence of course & lesson details and lesson content real estate being used. We will provide more details on release timeframe once we have our solution defined.
Yes! Please either make the maximized player view the default, or provide an option for us to set this as the default view. The current default view displays content incredibly small on screen (see attached examples of content made in Create as well as in Articulate Storyline360).
This would go a long way in resolving some navigation problems we're seeing when testing the new learner experience. Course material is lost in the noise of the sidebars and space below the player. Opening in full screen would fully immerse the learner in the content.
