There should be a "Learn More" button that is separate from the "Enroll" button.

  • Issue Summary: We are in the final stages of building our LMS and are about to launch. We have discovered issues with the "Enroll" button's multiple functionality.*

  • Proposal: There should be a "Learn More" button that is separate from the "Enroll" button.

  • "Enroll" Button Observations:

    • General Inconveniences/Potentially Confusing Issues:

      • Catalog and Course Information:

        • This button must be clicked (at least) twice (sometimes on the same page) for a learner to start a course (for both ILCs and Online Courses): once to see the course's information and once to start the course (for Online Courses) or enroll in a session (for ILCs).

        • The word "Enroll" on the catalog page implies that the person browsing the catalog is enrolling in the course when, in fact, they were perhaps only interested in the course's information and wanted to see its information page (ex., a manager browsing the catalog for the best courses for their team, or a learner who wanted to know more about a course).

        • To see the info page, a user must be "enrolled" in the course or click on the course name. This may cause confusion since instructions for where to click to see more info are not provided on the actual catalog page (especially in the list view). There is no obvious way to add this information to the catalog page.

      • My Courses:

        • Courses that users have clicked "enroll" for show up on their My Courses page. This is not ideal since, again, they may have only been trying to read about the course and do not want it on their list of courses they're taking.

        • There is also no clear place to remove the course from their My Courses page, so if someone reads about the course and realizes it wasn't for them, it's not apparent where to go to remove it, which clutters up their content on that page.

        • Sessions someone is enrolled in would ideally appear (or be able to be categorized) on their My Courses page, as well as courses that the learner has actually started. Right now, the only way to categorize these is by the categories that are in the catalog or by filtering them by type (ILC vs. Online Course and Recent Activity).

      • Translations:

        • The "Enroll" translation can be changed to something else (e.g., "More Info" or "See More"). However, the words have to be very short on the button, or else it runs over in certain views.

        • Since the "Enroll" button is used to see ILC and online course info and to enroll in an ILC session, this may cause some confusion. Again, maybe there should be a "Learn More" button that is separate from the "Enroll" button (i.e., the "Enroll" button is OK when it is for a session but not for seeing a course's info page).

      • Reporting:

        • Reporting Enrollments — As mentioned, users might click "enroll" to see the course information. They may not have actually wanted to take the course, which would cause false data when users look at "enrollments" in Analyze.

        • We can narrow down reporting to "In Progress" (for when they clicked "Start" but didn't finish the course), "Not Complete" (which is a manual status that an admin must implement), and "Not Started" (for when they just clicked "Enroll"). These three distinctions may be confusing to users. Information about the differences is available, but Analyze users or viewers of reports may overlook this. A separate "See More Info" button for courses might reduce this issue.

        • Since learners have to hit "Enroll" twice for ILCs, we can narrow reporting to session and course data. It would be nice not to have to do this just because learners wanted more information on the class.

*Existing solutions may be available for these issues that we have yet to discover as we are in the development phase and learning how to use the platform.
