I would also like to see this functionality. I have been looking into a work around idea - for teachers to add the attachments to the global resources directory, and add links to them in their messages to students. Each student or class could have their own category. The caveat is that each file added to the global resource directory will need to have it's availability rule set so that other users cannot see them if they are private.
