Course Approval: Ability for More than One Person to Approve

Courses require a supervisor’s approval. But we need an additional person who can view and approve or deny requests above the level of the supervisor (the supervisor’s supervisor).

This can be easily solved by updating the rule in the course approval section so one can stack approvals, just like we can do for user management. In other words, a solution would be to select supervisor approval and then add another line where you can identify someone else who can also provide approval. Here are two ways to do it:

  • Rule 1: Supervisor

  • Rule 2: Other (insert specific person)

OR

  • Rule 1: Supervisor

  • Rule 2: Supervisor’s Supervisor (common in HRISs)

Use Cases:
All involve building in redundancy in case one person is unavailable.

  • A supervisor is out sick and they need their manager to go in and approve requests for them in their absence.

  • A supervisor quits and until a new supervisor is hired, the manager needs to go in and approve requests.

PS: I understand that I can add multiple individual people using the “Other” option. But this is super labor-intensive, particularly when you're talking about somebody being out sick or somebody quitting as described in my use cases. The system is designed such that if a supervisor changes, the new supervisor automatically gets notified without having to update every course where course approval is turned on. Would like to keep this efficiency while adding the option of notifying a second person.
