We are currently working on the Manager function which is intended to serve the supervisor/manager persona in a more complete way.
When we were developing this feature, we did consider allowing assigned of a group to the Manager to define the scope of users they oversee.
However, we ran into some challenges with this, a User can only have one Manager assigned (this is true for Supervisor as well), if a group contained say 4 users, and that group was assigned to Manager 1. If any of those users are present in a second group and that group is assigned to Manager 2, then we need to have logic in place to determine what happens to the users who already have Manager 1 assigned.
This could lead to confusion for the Administrator who made the initial assignment if we suddenly move the users to the 2nd manager.
Ultimately, we concluded that it would be best to retain individual user assignment for each Manager.
