Depending on how users have their renewable certificates setup, it's possible to have overlapping valid certificates, such as if the user renews a certificate before the previous certificate expires. Having the ability to return only the latest valid certificate can help cut down on confusion with reporting.
Agreed - and this would be useful for the most recent course status e.g. don't include all fails, in progress and completions only take the most recent dated course enrollment information!
