We would like to see an option allowing us to assign multiple categories to courses. We created a "Greatest Hits" category, featuring it on our dashboard. The intent was to link existing courses to this "Greatest Hits" button on our dashboard. Unfortunately, we were unable to assign multiple categories to existing courses, so we had to create an additional category and duplicate each course, nesting them under that new category. It was an easy work around at the time, but it caused problems with reporting. We had to manually adjust reporting to reflect the accurate course completion, as the courses listed twice. Any plan to move forward with assigning multiple categories to courses in the future?
Hi Piotr,
Tags would be very useful if they could be used in the same way as categories. But they are not. Or at least, I have not got this to work.
As an Admin (and also as a learner) you want to be able to control how you see the course offering (catalog/my courses etc). Now, it defaults to a category view (which can be disabled in the Admin). What we would want (and I think many more) is either let categories work like tags (allowing for multiple courses in a category), or to be able to change the course overviews based on tags.
The way tags currently work is very limited. Allowing you to use it in advanced filters in the catalog for example (and I'm assuming when you search). But not to visually organize the structure of your course offering in the LMS.
Hello all,
As you're probably aware, course tags don't have this limitation, so you can assign a course to multiple tags. Based on the comments it seems like it doesn't fully meet your needs and I would be interested in finding out why? What makes the tags less suitable for content organization for each of you?
Thank you
We would love the ability to add paths/courses to multiple categories. Our product features work independently and in combination for different use cases, and being able to create use-case-based categories would improve our options for structuring our content.
I agree! I'd love to be able to see courses added to multiple categories. It would help when creating a selection for a subset of users (example: creating a category specifically for IT Managers, but also having these courses available to all users).
Hopefully, this is an easy tweak and gets implemented sooner than later. I'm again having to recategorize dozens and dozens of courses and realize If I could select and assign, it would take me less than 1 minute. But I'm facing an hour or longer job.
It'd be great to simplify the catalog list by overarching audiences or tasks. But to do this, we'd need the ability to add courses to multiple categories (think of a University style course catalog - generals that apply to multiple degree paths will be listed in many degrees). So our onboarding content could be listed in every catalog, for example.
For Paul. My use case appears to be the same as the OP, but I can imagine another that would be useful.
If the user is browsing, we will find advantages in users encountering the same course in more than one category. Feedback in our org is already that search isn't always helpful, so if you are going to look for something, you should be able to discover it in more than one relevant place.
We have many courses that fit in more than one categroy and would love to assign a single course to several categories.
Right now we duplicate the course in order to be able to place it in more than one area.
We have courses that would fit under more than one category, and it would make sense to just save them in the relevant areas. Instead we had to create more categories and Admin need to remember which category (folder) it's saved within when enrolling users.
Hi Paul,
To answer your request, we have a situation where it would be great to have the ability to place courses into more than one category.
In addition to the multiple categories for courses, it would also be helpful to have the option of assigning a single resource to multiple categories/subcategories in the Global Resources section.
We house several case studies for our learners in our LMS, within the Global Resources section. Some of the case studies fall under multiple sub-categories. Similarly to the course categories issue, we have to create additional categories and duplicate the resources, upload the same files multiple times, etc.... It takes a while to recreate them, and when we have to remove them from the system, you have to delete them all. I tried using the tagging option and lumping them all under one "Case Studies" category in the Global Resources section, but it was impossible to keep organized and our learners had issues locating the files in their searches.
It would be great to have the option of assigning multiple cateogries to not only the courses, but to the Global Resources as well. I can speak for admins when I say, it would save us so much time and keep our files better organized!
I can imagine accomplishing the above use case with a feature that doesn't specifically add a Course to multiple Categories. Before I go investigate that solution, does anyone watching this idea have another use case which could benefit from adding a Course to multiple Categories?
I'd just like to piggyback off of this and follow the thread. I just re-categorized a single course and I was given the notification that 6 people will be enrolled (I read it quickly and thought it was new people) then I saw the notifications that people who were purposefully un-enrolled, re-enrolled! Why would just putting a course in a new category re-enroll someone, that doesn't make sense!
